Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program

The U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright Program awards some 8,000 grants annually and operates in over 160 countries worldwide. Considered the flagship program of international educational and cultural exchange, the Fulbright program offers accomplished scholars the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to mutual understanding. The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by then Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas.

“International education exchange is the most significant current project designed to continue the process of humanizing mankind to the point, we hope, that nations can learn to live in peace.” J. William Fulbright.

The following Ohio State scholars and professional staff have received Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, Fulbright Specialist Program and Fulbright International Education seminar awards.

  • Michael Betz (associate professor, Department of Human Sciences, College of Education and Human Ecology) a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to study COVID-19’s impact on fertility in Norway and the United States.
  • Matthew Brock (associate professor, Department of Educational Studies, College of Education and Human Ecology) a Fulbright U.S. Specialist Award to develop inclusive curriculum designs in Mongolia.
  • Terry Esper (associate professor of logistics, Fisher College of Business) Fulbright U.S. Scholar Research Award to Finland.
  • Philip Grandinetti (professor, Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of Arts and Sciences) Fulbright U.S. Scholar Research Award to Italy.
  • Scott Hardy (extension educator, Ohio Sea Grant College Program in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Sea Grant) a Fulbright U.S. Specialist grant to the Universidad de Atacama in Chile to share his expertise in sustainable water management.
  • Gönül Z. Kaletunç (professor, Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences director, Faculty Professional Development Program in the College of Engineering) to share her expertise on "Advanced technologies in encapsulation of bioactive compounds: Research and academic approach" in Slovenia.
  • Sharvari Karandikar (professor and interim associate dean of academic affairs, College of Social Work) Fulbright U.S. Specialist Award to University of Coimbra in Portugal.
  • Gil Latz (vice provost for global strategies and international affairs) a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to participate in the International Education Administrators Seminar to France. The two-week seminar is designed to familiarize U.S. higher education administrators with France's higher education and research system.
  • Dianne Morrison-Beedy (Centennial Professor of Nursing, Infectious Disease Institute Professor, Chief Talent and Global Strategy Officer, Director, Office of Global Innovations, College of Nursing) a Fulbright U.S. Specialist Award to the Czech Republic.
  • Matthew Saltzman (professor, School of Earth Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences) a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to South Korea for “Reconstructing ancient carbon cycling in the Early Paleozoic (500 to 450 million years ago) of South Korea to inform global climate models.”
  • Joni Tornwall (associate clinical professor, Department of Human Sciences, co-director of the Academy for Teaching Innovation, Excellence, and Scholarship, director, Assessment and Evaluation, College of Nursing) a Fulbright Specialist Award to Finland.

  • Robert Baker (associate professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of Arts and Sciences) a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to advance the study of ultrafast, high intensity laser science and foster collaboration between international research communities in Hungary.
  • Enrico Bonello (professor, Department of Plant Pathology, College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences) for "Development of advanced phenotyping tools for the management of lethal, invasive alien tree pathogens (IATPs) in Sweden" in Sweden.
  • Sarah Rudolph Cole (Michael E. Moritz Chair in Alternative Dispute Resolution in the Moritz College of Law) a Fulbright U.S. Specialist Award to he Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas University in France to share her expertise in alternative dispute resolution.
  • Margaret Kwoka (Lawrence Herman Professor in Law in the Moritz College of Law) a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to México for "Independent Oversight of Transparency Laws in México."
  • Jesus Lara (professor of City and Regional Planning in the Knowlton School) a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for “A Place to Call Home: A study of the relationship between social change and the built environment, and the role of immigrant populations in the process of sustainable urban design, informality and placemaking” in Germany.

  • Lorraine Wallace (associate professor, biomedical education and anatomy, College of Medicine) a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for "Strengthening Primary Care Research and Medical Education Curriculum Development in North Macedonia."

  • Theodore Chao (associate professor, Department of Teaching and Learning, College of Education and Human Ecology) for "Digital Mathematics Storytelling in Southeast Asia" in Vietnam and Indonesia
