This session will highlight GOHi’s work with partners in North America and feature Dr. Bernadette Dunham, DVM, PhD, of the Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University. This plenary talk is part of GOHi’s celebration honoring 10 years of activities and impact in applied research, education and outreach to build One Health’s capacity worldwide. This special session by Dr. Dunham will cover topics related to putting One Health into action and why partnerships are critical for implementation. Dr. Bernadette Dunham is a professorial lecturer (2016-present) at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University, focusing on One Health issues. She is a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources. Dr. Dunham’s service with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 2002-2016 culminated in her position as director of the Center for Veterinary Medicine from 2008-2016. She currently serves as an advisor to the FDA One Health Initiative (2019 to present).
Previously, she was an assistant director with the American Veterinary Medical Association-Governmental Relations Division (1995-2002) and director of Laboratory Animal Medicine/adjunct professor of pharmacology, State University N.Y. Health Science Center, Syracuse, NY, (1987-1995). Dr. Dunham received her DVM from the Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph, and was in private veterinary practice for four years in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. She returned to academia to pursue her PhD at Boston University, where she earned her doctoral degree and completed postdoctoral research in cardiovascular pathophysiology.
