Global Arts and Humanities Discovery Theme: Human Rights in Transit Information Session

Thursday, November 08, 2018, 3:30PM - 4:30PM

With the city of London as its focus, this course will explore human rights in the context of global migration. As migration has become an increasingly global phenomenon, more and more immigrant-receiving countries around the world find themselves embroiled in similar debates over immigration, citizenship and political asylum. In such circumstances, migrant and refugee populations are more prone to vulnerability owing to exploitation, abuse, smuggling and trafficking. It is therefore more important than ever to understand how uprooted, displaced and re-located peoples find ways to constitute community and how receiving communities incorporate or isolate new residents. In this program we will examine cultural representations (art, literature, film, photography, street art and festival) of global migration and belonging, with particular emphasis on London’s rich past of immigration and present emphases on national security.
