Japanese Popular Culture Information Session

Thursday, October 18, 2018, 4:00PM - 5:00PM

Attend this information session to learn about the Japanese Pop Culture study abroad program which explores the world of Japanese popular culture, past and present. Over this May course, students spend two weeks in Columbus learning about how a lively culture “of the people, by the people” flourished in the old Japanese capital of Edo, how that culture was transformed by Japanese encounters with the west in the nineteenth century, and what happened when Japanese pop culture came to America. Then students travel together to Japan, spending two weeks experiencing Japanese popular culture for themselves. Based at the University of Tsukuba, in Tsukuba Science City, students visit temples in Kamakura, stroll the narrow streets of Tokyo’s low city, and take in the scene at the Shinjuku scramble. As students examine some of Japan’s many contributions to the global culture industry—anime, J-Pop, manga, Pokémon, sushi, Zen—they'll ask big questions about nationalism and cosmopolitanism, appropriation and authenticity, and what it means to be human in a world of commodities.
