Sean Kay is Robson Professor of Politics and Government at Ohio Wesleyan University. He is also an associate at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies at The Ohio State University and a non-resident fellow at the Eisenhower Institute in Washington, D.C.

He has published widely on international security issues including the books NATO and the Future of European Security (1998); Global Security in the Twenty First Century: The Quest for Power and the Search for Peace (3rd edition, 2015); Celtic Revival? The Rise, Fall and Renewal of Global Ireland (2011); America’s Search for Security: The Triumph of Idealism and the Return of Realism (2015); and Rockin’ the Free World! How the Rock and Roll Revlution Changed America and the World (2017).

Kay has previously held positions as visiting research fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies in the U.S. Department of Defense and visiting assistant professor at Dartmouth College.

Abstract

Sean Kay will present his new book which uses interviews with more than 60 American and international rock and roll performers, songwriters, producers, managers, and non-profit activists to show how rock and roll has been a platform of power advancing progress. The talk will focus on how this popular music form has also become an ethic which has helped to advance freedom, equality, human rights, and peace via education and activism. This talk will feature the impact that artists have had on war and peace issues, highlighting interviews with artists like David Crosby and Graham Nash, Country Joe McDonald, and Serj Tankian among others. The event will also include live music.
