How does the Brazilian state respond to refugee influxes, and conversely, how do refugees respond to state-led resettlement/integration policies? Over the past few decades, the politics of refugee migration have gained an increasingly important role across the developing world, especially in Latin America, as the number of individuals crossing borders in search of economic opportunity and security has increased

A PhD candidate in political science, José O. Pérez’s dissertation focuses on the impacts and ramifications of contemporary refugee resettlements and integration processes, a subset process within the broader category of "South-South migration," focusing on the resettlement and integration of Venezuelan refugees in Brazil. Specifically, the proposed empirical contribution of this project is to detail how individuals in Latin America are constrained by, negotiate, challenge and redefine state-led resettlement policies.

Speaker: José O. Pérez is a PhD candidate in political science at Ohio State. Pérez holds an M.A. in International Strategic Studies from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He also has a B.A. in Political Science and Latin American Studies from the University of Florida and was a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Fellow in Brazil from 2015-2016. His research publications include articles in the International Feminist Journal of Politics, Latin American Perspectives and Contexto Internacional. His research interests include critical security studies, migration and borders and race and gender in international politics.

Moderator: Mariana Correa, PhD candidate at the Institute of International Relations at the University of São Paulo
