Education Abroad Profile - Anna Guo

AnnaGuoProgram: ISA Seoul, South Korea: Korean Language and Electives in English at Korea University
Major: Neuroscience
Minor: Political Science
Rank: Senior

Studying abroad was always my dream and goal in college. My dream became a reality this summer when I studied abroad in Seoul, South Korea, through the six-week International Studies Abroad Korean Language and Electives in English program hosted by Korea University. I am a neuroscience major and a political science minor. This program was a perfect fit for my love for Asian culture while pursuing my interest in politics. My goal is to become an educated medical professional who is compassionate and respectful to all walks of life. In the context of my Asian roots, I want to serve in an Asian-American community after professional school, and this exposure to the Korean language will help me.

During my studies at Korea University, I was able to take two classes that really helped me understand more about the Korean peninsula through historical and artistic approach: History of Korean-American Relations and Introduction to Contemporary Korean Art. In the face of current North Korean tension, I really appreciate the unfiltered knowledge I gained about the rocky historical context between the United States and the Korean peninsula. I was also able to understand North Korea more through artwork produced by the country and the setting around their production.

Besides Korea University, I am extremely grateful to have visited many places around Seoul such as the Gyeongbokgung Palace, Gwangjang market and many more. I tried on the traditional Korea clothing known as Hanbok and explored many street food alleys. My program provider ISA also did an amazing job of organizing a trip to the port city of Busan where I visited the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple. It was an extraordinary experience to be able to compare and contrast with the temples in China. Moreover, the Busan excursion was definitely refreshing to see the differences in food, language and style of life between Busan and Seoul.

Studying abroad was definitely the best decision I made in 2017. The experiences I had in Korea surpassed my expectations, and the friends I made are definitely lifelong. As a result, I am extremely grateful to the Gilman Scholarship for helping me achieve and shoot beyond my dream. It would have been financially impossible for me to travel and study in a country halfway around the world for six weeks. However, I am proud the Gilman Scholarship committee believed in me as I really did not expect to receive this award. To my fellow Ohio State students, I highly encourage everyone to take advantage of studying abroad and consider applying to the Gilman Scholarship. In addition to getting financial assistance, the Gilman Scholarship network is vast and resourceful. Gilman alumni receive exclusive newsletters, career opportunities and conferences. I am proud to be a Gilman alumna.
