“I did a short-term study abroad experience (almost 2 weeks) in Honduras which also involved coursework at Ohio State a quarter prior to leaving, a community development project while in-country, and a final reflective project upon return to OSU. We all worked in small groups to plan for strengthening the small community of Nueva Esperanza, Honduras. I chose to work with a small group of adolescent girls from the orphanage where we stayed. Since most of the children at the orphanage suffered from abuse and/or HIV/AIDS, we implemented a mural-painting project that would help them to collaborate and see the positive results of something that they did. Strengthening the bonds of their small social group through an elaborate project of planning, sketching, and painting multiple murals helped them to develop self-esteem, confidence, and positive peer relationships.”
