Ohio State Students Awarded Gilman International Scholarship

GilmanThree Ohio State students, Oseremhen Arheghan, Rezvan Baghbanian and Fatima Dahir, are recipients of a prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.

Arheghan, Baghbanian and Dahir are three of nearly 1,450 American undergraduate students from over 400 colleges and universities across the United States selected to receive this scholarship to study abroad during the 2019-2020 academic year.

Baghbanian, a junior majoring in neuroscience, will participate in the ISA Granada, Spain: Spanish Language, Culture and Electives program spring semester 2020.

“By receiving the Gilman Scholarship, a tremendous weight has been lifted off my shoulders,” Baghbanian said. “It has provided me with the opportunity to relax and fully experience Spain without worrying about monetary restrictions that would have otherwise inhibited my time abroad.”

Arheghan, a junior majoring in political science and Chinese, will spend June and July 2020 in Suzhou, China on the Intensive Chinese Language Program in Suzhou program.

“The Gilman Scholarship definitely allows me to pursue a program like this,” Arheghan said. “Because this study abroad program is so long, it’s quite costly, and even with STEP, I wouldn’t be able to consider it without the Gilman. The classes I’ll be enrolled in count toward my major and allow me to take more advanced language courses once I return.”

Dahir, a junior majoring in public management, leadership, and policy, will participate in the Greece – Introduction to Western Tradition and Contemporary Issues in Corfu, Greece program in May 2020.

“Getting the Gilman Scholarship means being able to participate in a transformative experience that I would not have otherwise considered possible, and not have to worry about a significant financial burden on my shoulders,” Dahir said. “I am so grateful for this opportunity!”

Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their education abroad program costs with additional funding available for the study of critical languages overseas. The Gilman scholarship supports American undergraduate students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad.

Students who are studying abroad summer 2020, autumn 2020, academic year 2020-2021, winter 2021 and spring 2021 and are Pell grant eligible are encouraged to apply for the next Gilman Scholarship. The application will open mid-January, and the deadline to apply is March 3.
