Education Abroad Profile - Jayne Touati

JayneTouatiMajor: International Studies specializing in International Relations and Diplomacy
Minor: City and Regional Planning and Philosophy
Rank: Junior
Program: ISA Madrid, Spain: Spanish Language, Liberal Arts and Business at Universidad Antonio de Nebrija, autumn 2017

My program was International Study Abroad Madrid. I chose this program because it was in the location I wanted to go, was not specific to any major and had the lowest language requirement. ISA allows all different living styles, but Ohio State required a homestay. My homestay was a single mother with her two kids, a cat and my roommate, and it was absolutely amazing. ISA Madrid has several different colleges, but I personally went to Universidad de Nebrija. I took four courses, both in English and in Spanish, and I had some of the best professors imaginable and learned an incredible amount. ISA sponsored some trips such as to Morocco, Granada and Segovia, and on the weekends they did not have trips, I traveled with my friends.

My favorite transformational moment was when I was in Barcelona on the day Catalonia attempted to declare independence. I had then realized that despite the probable failure of the independence movement, I was actively watching history being made and seeing these people believe their world was going to change.

If you can fit it into your schedule (which you probably can), then you should absolutely study abroad. On top of studying abroad, I would push any student to go far outside of their comfort box when they are there. More than anything else, I am so proud of myself for all the places I traveled, locals I met and experiences I had due to me being brave and reaching out. I learned more than I imagined possible about the world and myself and would highly encourage others to do the same.
