Devany Howard, an Ohio State senior majoring in international studies and anthropology, participated in the FIE/AMIDEAST Peace & Conflict Resolution program in Ireland and Jordan with the help of the Gilman scholarship.Devany Howard, Ohio State senior and Gilman scholarship recipient, in Jordan.

“The Gilman scholarship provided me the opportunity to go on this program,” “Howard said. “Without the extra funding I would not have been able to take on the full financial responsibility. Through this program I learned about the Northern Ireland conflict and the peace processes that were involved to successfully resolve issues and restore its national unity. Additionally, we looked closely at the Arab-Israeli conflict assessing its historical roots, determining current claims and identifying how to best more forward. I was also able to choose the extended program and subsequently learned a semester’s worth of Arabic.”

Howard said she encourages eligible students to apply because of the support system with scholarship alumni, events and opportunities.

“The Gilman is a generous scholarship that allows students to go abroad when they normally cannot afford to,” Howard said. “Additionally, after being awarded the scholarship I received invitations to take advantage of the many services the scholarship provided that help students get ready to go abroad, how to acclimate while abroad, and how to readjust when they get back. There is also a strong support system with alumni and more opportunities to stay involved. I don't think that there is any reason not to apply if you're eligible!”

Ohio State alumnus Benjamin Beall studied Japanese and international studies through the Waseda University International Exchange program in Japan for 11 months his senior year.

“The Gilman scholarship provided more than 10 percent of my study abroad budget,” Beall said. “I literally could not have studied for 11 months in Japan without it. My year at Waseda University in Tokyo was a key factor in my achieving business-level fluency in Japanese, which upon graduation led to my hiring as a Japanese interpreter-translator at a manufacturing plant in Ohio. If you want to study abroad and have limited financial means, you definitely should apply for the Gilman Scholarship.”

Beall said the application process takes a little bit of time, but the time invested into applying for the Gilman scholarship could make all the difference in someone’s education abroad experience.

“The application process requires you to write two essays, which can help hone your sense of purpose for studying abroad,” Beall said. “What do you have to lose except a little of your time? That’s a small investment for a scholarship that could make the difference between being able to study abroad or not – especially since studying abroad definitely opens the doors to expanded worldviews and career opportunities.”

Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need. Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad in a country in which the language is predominantly spoken can apply for a supplemental award of up to $3,000, for a combined total of $8,000.

Application deadlines for the Gilman scholarship vary depending on the semester the student will study abroad. The application deadline for students studying abroad in spring 2018 and the early deadline for summer 2018 is October 3, and the final deadline for summer 2018 is March 6.

The Office of International Affairs will host two Gilman scholarship information sessions January 18 and February 15, 5-6:30 p.m., 160 Enarson.
