BrazilphotoClovetta Callender is an undergraduate student from the College of Education and Human Ecology and studied abroad in Brazil through the Higher Education in Brazil program.

This past spring, I had the privilege to participate in the “Higher Education in Brazil” education abroad program sponsored by the College of Education and Human Ecology (EHE) and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI). My time in Brazil was life-changing. In addition to serving as my first time on an airplane, this trip gave me the opportunity to immerse myself in a culture that had strong historical ties to my own, while forming lasting friendships and memories.

Prior to traveling to Brazil, my classmates and I attended several pre-departure meetings which introduced us to the Afro-Brazilian culture as well as the educational facilities in the country. Before applying for this trip, I was unaware of the racial makeup of Brazil nor the African roots and beliefs deeply engraved in the culture.

Jordan Sibley"My study abroad experience changed my worldview in many ways, but the most important was my exposure to what culture means to a developing country like Uganda and how it heavily influences the structure of its families, government and the livelihood of many people who live in this country," Jordan Sibley said. "Sacrifices and decisions are made that we will never understand or even agree with because our loyaly lies in a very different place amongst very different people."

TW1"My most transformational moment was most likely at the San Isidro Festival in Madrid," said Tevian Whitehurst. "It was a traditional festival celebrating patron Saint Isidore. Locals everywhere were wearing cultural garments, and there were multiple celebrations throughout the city, including a carnival! There was amazing food, and I was interacting so well with the other festival-goers. I really felt like a part of culture."

Tevian, a second-year atmospheric science major and Spanish and media production analysis minor, participated on the Spain Global May program in Madrid, Spain, in May 2018.
