Global Gateways Host International Business Panel

BusinessPanel webThe Global Gateways teamed up to host a panel discussion on “Doing Business in Emerging Countries” at the Columbus campus on March 20. Centered around how multinationals, entrepreneurs and investors can go about identifying opportunities and responding to new challenges while conducting business in emerging markets, the panelists outlined the unique challenges and approaches to business in emerging markets stemming from their own professional experiences while working in China, India and Brazil. The dialogue enabled engaging students and faculty on approaches to develop cross-cultural strategies when partnering with international stakeholders, navigating government relations, identifying local opportunities and addressing risks.

On the panel were Rodolfo Bellesi, founder and principal at IKOVE Capital, a venture development company in technology commercialization; Steve Crandall, general manager of Asia Growth Solutions; and Ardeshir Contractor, professor of practice at The Ohio State University. The panel moderator was Rafael Corredoira, an assistant professor of management and human resources at the Fisher College of Business.

The panelists shared interesting anecdotes from their decades of in-country experience. The panelists discussed how before beginning their work abroad, they did not understand the difficulties and challenges of doing business in emerging countries. However, they soon realized the intricacies of how business is conducted and nuances of people relationships. They also shared the importance of partnerships, networking, understanding and establishing sound working relations with government, the ability to identify local opportunities and risk management.

Gil Latz, vice provost for international affairs and global strategies introduced the panel, and emphasized the importance of international relations.
