Resident director, Christopher Reed on campus at East China Normal UniversityThe China Gateway provides a wide variety of services for faculty to aid establishing research collaborations, teaching pedagogy and to make traveling to China easier and more efficient. All staff members are bilingual and have lived and studied in both China and the United States. The China Gateway office is located in the central business district of Shanghai and is well connected with the Ohio State alumni network, universities and corporate partners. Faculty are encouraged to contact the office in advance to make their travel arrangements to China.

The China Gateway also is involved with funding and administering grant opportunities, helping to facilitate international agreement and assisting education abroad programs in-country.  

China Travel Guide

The China Travel Guide serves as an information toolkit for faculty and staff to better understand the international travel process, learn about the local culture and obtain the most out of a business trip to China. The guide provides information about arrangements for pre-departure and post-arrival, how to select the appropriate visa and insight into the local Chinese culture.

Grant Opportunities

The Global Gateway Discovery Theme Research Seed Grant competition promotes research collaborations between Ohio State faculty and partners in the Greater China region, including Hong Kong and Taiwan. The grant provides seed funding that promotes interdisciplinary research on the Discovery Themes of food production and security, health and wellness, energy and environment and the humanities and arts.

Recent Research Seed Grant recipients include:

  • Lingying Zhao, professor in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, for her proposal, Agricultural Energy and the Environment: China-U.S. Research and Education Collaboration.
  • Shu-Hua Wang, MD, associate professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, for her proposal, Establishing a New Unique Partnership Between The Ohio State University and China Global One-Health Partners.

All finalists for this award exemplified Ohio State's goal to conduct research and collaborate with Chinese counterparts. All Discovery Theme areas were addressed by the finalists, and the winners each received a $20,000 grant this year.

Academic Partnerships

International Agreements

HuazhongThe Office of International Affairs is the first point of contact in developing international agreements. Contact Joanna Kukielka-Blaser (kukielka-blaser.1@osu.edu), program director, international relations, if you are interested in working on formalizing an agreement.

  • Over 70 agreements are active in the Greater China Area. Including seven Dual Degree Agreements, 32 Memoranda of Agreements (MOA), 33 Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) and  four Student Exchange Agreements.
  • The agreements were initiated by various colleges:
    • 12 in the College of Arts and Sciences
    • Nine in the College of Engineering
    • Seven in the Moritz College of Law
    • Six in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

Education Abroad Programs

The China Gateway helps facilitate various education abroad programs according to each program’s needs. For example, the China Gateway assists the Global May China program in the following ways:

  • Designs the two-day program in Shanghai to introduce the city’s history and culture
  • Books hotels and local transportation, and provides travel tips
