Global Perspectives: Sammy Bonner

Sammy Bonner is an undergraduate student majoring in interior design, who participated in the Design Matters education abroad program in 2018. Design Matters is a collaboration with Mackenzie Presbyterian University, where students create designs to positively impact a local community in need.

I’m Sammy Bonner, and I’m a junior interior designer at Ohio State. I’m from Lafayette, Indiana, and I moved to Columbus to study design at Ohio State! I decided to study design because I loved the TV show, Bar Rescue, when I was growing up and I’ve always wanted to be able to create beautiful solutions to problems like these. I hope to be able to travel more for design in my future career.

Brazil was one of the most amazing places that I have ever been in my life. I’ve never been somewhere that felt so alive. Every person that we met on this trip was so friendly and welcoming and ready to teach us all about São Paulo. This trip has also made me more conscious than ever of homelessness. There are so many people who don’t receive the same respect just because of their living situation, and this trip has really shown me that all people deserve the privileges available to the upper or middle classes. The impact of design has also never been more obvious to me than after we completed our projects in CISARTE. You could truly see the enthusiasm and excitement of the people in this space after they got to see the designs that we completed.
