Brazil Gateway hosts Festa Junina Buckeye

Last Saturday, the Ohio State Brazil Gateway hosted its first Festa Junina Buckeye, a Brazilian June festival to celebrate the country culture. Co-sponsored by the Fisher College of Business, the celebration brought together alumni, researchers, students, partners and friends at the office of the Brazil Gateway in Sao Paulo.

June Festivals are celebrated in many countries and in Brazil Festa Junina is part of the Portuguese heritage. The festivities include wearing traditional clothes that resemble the ones worn in old country villages, eating classic farm foods such as corn and carrot cakes, as well as drinking hot wine (it is winter in Brazil during the month of June). Bonfires, colorful flags and balloons are part of the decorations. The Brutus logo for Festa Junina Buckeye was designed by Renata Bobrowski Rodrigues whose sister, Daniele Bobrowski Rodrigues, is a current doctoral student at Ohio State. Renata’s entry won the logo design contest by creatively dressing Brutus in traditional Festa Junina clothing.

By mixing traditional Brazilian festa junina with some Buckeye culture, the Festa Junina Buckeye was a unique multicultural celebration. It certainly brought back fond memories for Brazilian Buckeyes who left Ohio State long ago and helped current Buckeyes visiting Brazil for work or research feel right at home.

The Brazil Gateway continues to engage the growing community of Buckeyes in Brazil, fostering connections between alumni, students studying in-country, and friends of Ohio State in Brazil.
