Location: Jaipur, India
Rank: Senior

“As a native to Ohio, I was born and raised in nearby Dayton. However, both of my parents came to the U.S. from Puerto Rico, instilling in me a language, culture and set of values that have become my own. This bicultural background has challenged me to think differently and has equipped me many of the tools needed to adapt and thrive across the globe. At Ohio State, I have sought such opportunities that allow me to teach, learn, give and receive in these different cultural contexts.

This summer, I am interning in Jaipur, India with 5 other engineering students. We are working on characterizing the materials properties of the Jaipur Foot, a low-cost prosthetic that was developed in 1979. Through our work, we hope to provide useful information about the foot that can be used in scaling up production to reach the millions of amputees in India and other developing countries. We are partnering with a local university, Malaviya National Institute of Technology. O-H-I-O in IndiaHere, we use testing equipment and collaborate with graduate students, whose help has been invaluable in navigating this different research environment.

When outside the lab, you can find me cruising through the hot, dusty streets of Jaipur in auto-rickshaws; visiting temples, forts and gurudwalas. I have dined with Muslims post-sunset; touring the State of Rajasthan with the graduate students; and taking weekend trips to the big cities of Mumbai and Delhi.”
