Vasallo will lecture on the current state of Cuba and Cuban women

Cuabn womenNorma Vasallo will present "Cuba and Cuban Women Today" on Thursday, May 17 from 3:30 - 5 p.m. in 156 University Hall. Vasallo's lecture, which will be conducted in Spanish with simultaneous interpretation in English, will address how today's world is changing, and how Cuba is changing with it, a situation which presents challenges and opportunities to the women of Cuba.

Vasallo will talk about Cuba and Cuban women today, including a discussion of such issues as gender, race, class and sex work or prostitution. She will suggest how women's rights and gender equity in Cuba might be advanced in the future. Following the lecture, Vasallo will open the floor for questions.

Vasallo's lecture is presented by the Center for Latin American Studies, the Office of International Affairs Outreach and the U.S. Women and Cuba Collaboration.

Norma Vasallo

Norma Vasallo Barrueta, professor of psychological sciences at the University of Havana, is the Chair of the Department of Women's studies and has been the general coordinator of the Women's Center since its foundation in 1991, and its president since 1998. She has directed research studies on behavioral disorders, community intervention in youth, socio-psychological aspects of AIDS, the impact of economic restructuring and social changes on working women, gender equity and power. Some of Vasallo's recent books are Behavioral Disorders: A Psychosocial Approach, Cuban Women: History, Contradictions and Contemporary Changes, Crisis, Economic Changes and the Subjectiveness of Cuban Women and Mirar de otra manera.
