“Spending time working, studying, and living in another country broadens our understanding of the world—its people, its beauty, its challenges. The experience deepens our compassion and commitment to remedying pressing human needs. It helps us appreciate the richness of our own country. And, perhaps most important, it instills in us the confidence that we can, in fact, make a difference and make our mark.”
-President E. Gordon Gee
At The Ohio State University, our international research, education and internship programs provide students and faculty with opportunities to explore and understand the increasingly interconnected world around us. The Area Studies Centers advance knowledge and awareness of international cultures and world regions. The centers work with Ohio State departments to identify programmatic needs, sponsor a wide range of academic activities including lectures, symposia, conferences and library resources, as well as outreach activities for P-12 students and teachers.
Ohio State is committed to becoming a preeminent global university — one that prepares its students and faculty to participate actively in knowledge-based collaborations around the world. Critical components of this goal include expanding and strengthening Ohio State’s global presence through the establishment of Global Gateway offices, and continuing to provide and foster exceptional opportunities for students across disciplines to study abroad.
Ohio State proudly welcomes more than 6,000 international students and 1,500 international scholars who currently study, teach or conduct research on campus. The Office of International Affairs serves as the point of support for these students and scholars, assisting with the transition to life at Ohio State and in Columbus; providing social, cultural and educational programs; and answering questions related to personal concerns, cultural differences, immigration regulations and financial matters.
The Mershon Center for International Security Studies works to advance the understanding of national security in a global context. The center accomplishes its mission through the hiring of world-class faculty, funding interdisciplinary faculty and student research, and hosting an array of speakers, conferences and workshops on international security issues.
