Supplemental Health InsuranceOhio State students traveling to international locations for the purpose of undergraduate or graduate/dissertation research, international internships, or independent study, which is part of their academic program, are strongly encouraged to enroll in the University's supplemental study abroad health insurance. The supplemental insurance includes coverage for emergency assistance, evacuation, and repatriation. Please complete the Office of International Affairs Supplemental Health Insurance form to apply for coverage. U.S. Embassy RegistrationEvery Ohio State student who is a U.S. citizen and who is traveling to international locations for the purpose of study abroad, internship, research, and/or independent study is required to register with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate through the U.S. Department of State travel registration web site. Registration will make your presence and whereabouts known in case it is necessary to contact you in an emergency. In accordance with the FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), information on your welfare and whereabouts generally may not be released without your express authorization. Millions of Americans travel abroad every year and encounter no difficulties; however, U.S. embassies and consulates can provide both emergency and non-emergency services to American citizens who encounter problems while abroad. Registration is voluntary and costs nothing and should be a part of your travel planning and security. For much useful information on traveling abroad as students, consult the new State Department web site. International Travel AppointmentIt is important to review your health concerns before you travel abroad and to familiarize yourself with special health and medical needs for the country you are visiting. You are encouraged to schedule an International Travel Appointment at the Ohio State Wilce Student Health Center (or your personal physician) at least one full quarter before departure. At this appointment, you will meet with a physician or nurse practitioner for a half hour consultation to discuss health concerns and issues that pertain to your destination. They will also help determine if any vaccinations or additional prophylaxis is necessary to help assure your health while traveling abroad and upon your return. To schedule your International Travel Appointment, call the Ohio State Student Health Center at (614) 292-4321. In addition to your appointment, you may also want to gather health information about your host country from the Center for Disease Control web site. |
