Friday, 02 May 2008
The East Asian Studies Center is seeking quality research papers and essays from Ohio State students for this year’s Undergraduate Writing Prize competition. Faculty members are encouraged to recommend students to submit their work for consideration. The papers/essays can derive from any discipline and methodological framework as long as issues pertinent to East Asia are either the focus of the paper or form a vital component of a comparative project.

Criteria

Awards will be given for work that combines synthesis of existing scholarship with original analysis in the following categories:

  • Research papers (10 pages or more)
  • Essays (10 pages or less)

All work must have been written in English for courses taught between June 2007 and June 2008. Students may submit one paper in each of the two categories. Students must be currently enrolled at Ohio State in order to be eligible.

 Awards

The amount of the awards will range from $100 to $250 dollars for research papers and $50 to $150 dollars for essays. If the submitted papers/essays do not meet the committee’s criteria of originality, soundness and clarity, the committee reserves the right not to issue any award. Announcements will be made by July 2008.

Deadline and Application Process

The deadline for receipt of the papers/essays to be considered for the awards is June 6, 2008, 4 p.m.

To be considered, students must submit four clean, hard copies of the paper devoid of all forms of identification. A separate sheet of paper should be included and contain the student's name and comlete contact information (address, phone number, email), title of paper, major and academic rank, the course for which the paper was written, and the professor who taught it. All of these documents should be delivered to the East Asian Studies Center. E-mail submissions are not acceptable.
