What is the deadline for filing the FAFSA?

The Ohio State priority deadline is March 1, but for students studying abroad we recommend completing and submitting the application in January.

What type of aid can I use to fund my study abroad?

All federal/state grants and loans can be used to finance study abroad expenses. Many campus based scholarships and grants can also be used.

Are there any types of aid I can’t use?

Some external scholarships may not be used for study abroad; ultimately, it is the donor’s decision how the scholarship can be administered. Also, some departmental scholarships may be excluded. For example, a scholarship from the College of Engineering might only be applicable to Ohio State tuition – check with the department/donor issuing the scholarship.

I may need to buy my plane ticket a month or two before I leave the country. Can I access my financial aid early to pay for it?

No. According to federal regulations, financial aid can only be disbursed 5-7 days prior to the start of your program.

Will my grants/scholarships be increased because I’m studying abroad?

No. Grants and scholarships have a maximum amount per quarter that a student may receive. Loans, however, can be redistributed to allow a student a larger disbursement for the quarter they will study abroad.

Why should I sign up for Direct Deposit?

If Direct Deposit has been established, students may receive excess funds 5-7 days prior to the start of your program. If it has not been established, students must wait 5 days into the regular quarter at Ohio State to get the money via a mailed check.

How do the majority of students finance their study abroad?

Loans are the largest source of financing.
