All of the required application materials must be received by the Office of International Affairs by the application deadlines noted above for the quarter the student wishes to begin his or her studies. An application is ONLY considered complete if all of the following documents are included: - Completed International Exchange Program Application
- Photocopies of passport
- Copies of the pages in the applicant’s passport that contain biographical information and passport expiration. Please also include copies for any dependents (spouse and/or children) who would accompany the student to Ohio State, if applicable.
- Sufficient financial documentation
- IEP students pay tuition and fees to their host institution, but do NOT have to pay tuition to The Ohio State University. However, they are responsible for paying for living expenses, OSU health insurance, and various student fees.
- Students need to provide proof at the time of application that they have sufficient funds to cover the estimated expenses of their entire period of study. To participate as an IEP student, the current estimated cost of exchange study is $4187 per quarter. Please multiply this estimated cost by the number of quarters the student intends to study.
- Please note: this estimated cost of exchange study is valid as of January 2008 and is subject to future change. Every effort will be made to update this website as needed.
- Additional proof of funding will be required for those students planning on bringing dependents with him or her to Ohio State; please contact the Incoming IEP Coordinator for more details.
- Financial support documentation may include, but is not limited to, a scholarship award letter and/or an official bank statement(s) translated in English and calculated in a U.S. Dollar amount. Bank statements should be printed on the official letterhead of the bank and include a stamp and/or signature from a bank official verifying its authenticity. If the bank statement included in an application is from a family member or friend of the student, a completed Affidavit of Financial Support form must be included as well.
- Official academic records
- To be eligible to apply for exchange study:
- Undergraduate students must be at the junior or senior level and have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 (4.0 system)
- Graduate students must also have an average GPA of 3.0 (4.0 system), as well as the equivalent of a four-year U.S. bachelor’s degree.
- Students must provide official academic records and transcripts of all previous academic course work when applying for admission. All documents, including mark sheets, examination certificates, and diplomas, must be in the original language and must be certified by a school administrator or an American Embassy or Consular Official. A literal English translation certified by an appropriate school official, official translator, or U.S. embassy or consulate official must be attached to documents not originally issued in English.
- Proof of English language proficiency
- Demonstrated English language proficiency is required and can be demonstrated by submitting one of the following:
- An official score of at least 527 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for undergraduate students, 550 for graduate students
- An official score of at least 197 on the computer-based TOEFL for undergraduate students, 213 for graduate students
- An official score of at least 71 on the internet-based TOEFL for undergraduate students, 79 for graduate students
- An official score of at least 79 on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) for undergraduate students, 82 for graduate students
- An official score of at least 7.0 on the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) exam for graduate students only

- Please arrange early in the application process to have an official test score report sent directly to Ohio State by the testing agency. Ohio State's institution code is #1592. The test must have been taken within the last two years
- Some graduate programs may require a higher level of English language proficiency for courses offered in their department.
- Applicants who are citizens of or who have received a bachelor's degree from one of the following countries are exempt from the English proficiency requirement: Australia, Belize, the British Caribbean and British West Indies, Canada (except Quebec), England, Guyana, Ireland, Liberia, New Zealand, Scotland, the United States, and Wales.
- Letter of recommendation from the outgoing exchange coordinator or university professor
- This letter should specify why the student is recommended for participation as an IEP student at Ohio State and also include the following: academic level (graduate or undergraduate), academic discipline, and intended length of stay including first and last quarters of attendance.
- Personal statement from the student
- The student must prepare a one-page statement telling us about himself or herself, including academic and personal interests as well as motivation for studying abroad.
