The Office of International Affairs is pleased to sponsor a variety of opportunities for Ohio State students to study in the People’s Republic of China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. This guide offers preliminary information on current programs available during the upcoming academic year.Programs in the People’s Republic of ChinaART AND CULTURE IN CHINAOffered Summer Quarter 2008: 2nd Term (July 21 – August 18, 2008) This program is an intensive cultural immersion experience that introduces students to issues of the arts and culture of China. Based in Beijing and Shanghai, the program integrates classroom instruction with field trips to museums, film studios and artists’ studios, and places of cultural importance including the historic cities of Hangzhou and Suzhou. Students will earn credit for history of art (including a GEC class), film studies, and independent studies. The program is open to undergraduates (sophomore or above) and graduate students of all majors. INTENSIVE CHINESE LANGUAGE STUDY IN QINGDAO Offered: Summer Quarter 2008 (mid-June to mid-August) These programs offer intensive Chinese language instruction at intermediate or advanced level in speaking, listening, reading, writing, and culture. Particular emphasis is placed on developing appropriate cultural behavior, ability to perform effectively in cultural contexts, and interpersonal communication skills. Based in Qingdao, these programs utilize a community-based learning approach that requires participants to interact with people in local communities. Prerequisite: completion of Chinese 103 before departure. FAES ABROAD: THE BEIJING EXPERIENCE Offered: Summer Quarter 2008 (5 weeks: June 15 – July 25, 2008 tentative) This program, sponsored by the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, examines agricultural production systems in the People’s Republic of China and issues connected with China’s emergence as a leading economic force in the global marketplace. Based in Beijing, students will visit sites of agricultural, economic, social and cultural importance. This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors. Students earn credit for International Studies, Rural Sociology, and Agricultural Economics. MINORITY CULTURES ON THE SOUTHWEST FRONTIER Offered in 2009 (3 weeks following Spring Quarter) This program is an extension of a course on the folklore of select minority groups of southwest China. Emphasis will be on gaining perspective on cultural processes in terms of oral performance, folk dance, material culture, and tradition-oriented conceptual art. The program takes place in southwest China, focusing on Yunnan province (Kunming, Chuxiong, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-la County and Lake Lugu), home to many of China’s minority cultures. The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors. Students accepted to the program are required to enroll in a prerequisite course taught during Spring Quarter 2009. HISTORY AND CULTURE OF CHINA Offered in 2009 (4 weeks: mid-June to mid-July) This program examines stereotypes about Chinese culture and explores the role of localities in creating Chinese culture. The program will be based in four cities – Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Beijing – and include excursions to nearby destinations. The program provides a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in urban life, history, and culture, while earning credit for courses in Chinese history. The program is open to undergraduate (sophomore or above) and graduate students of all majors. Programs in JapanJAPANESE STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM IN KOBEOffered: Spring Quarter 2008 This program offers intermediate/advanced language instruction and introduction to Japanese culture. Classes will be held in the Japan Study Center at Kobe Shoin Women’s University. Field trips to Osaka, Kyoto, and Himeji introduce students to aspects of Japanese culture. The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors who will have completed at least 2½ years (or equivalent) of college-level Japanese instruction before the program begins. Prerequisites: Japanese 508, or Japanese 310 and 311. INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM – HOKKAIDO UNIVERSITY (HUSTEP PROGRAM) Offered: Academic Year (October to early August) This student exchange program offers courses in Japanese language, and courses in Japanese history and culture taught in English. Students with facility in Japanese language may be allowed to take other courses offered in Japanese. The program is based at Hokkaido University in Sapporo. The program is open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students who have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Japanese language ability is not necessary. INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM – INTERNATIONAL CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY Offered: Academic Year (September to June) This student exchange program provides opportunities for independent study of Japanese language and culture in a supportive environment. ICU is located in Mitaka, northwest of Tokyo. The program is open to Ohio State juniors and seniors who have a minimum 3.0 GPA and at least 2 years (or equivalent) of college-level Japanese instruction by the time the program begins. INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM – NANZAN UNIVERSITY Offered: Academic Year (September to June) This student exchange program provides opportunities for independent study of Japanese language and culture in a supportive environment. Nanzan University is located in Nagoya. The program is open to Ohio State juniors and seniors who have a minimum 3.0 GPA and at least 2 years (or equivalent) of college-level Japanese instruction by the time the program begins. INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM – UNIVERSITY OF TSUKUBA Offered: Academic Year (Mid-April to March); or Term I (Mid-April to end of June), or Term II (September to end of November) This student exchange program offers undergraduate courses in Japanese language and culture in addition to courses in a variety of other subjects. The University of Tsukuba is located 38 miles northeast of Tokyo, near Mt. Tsukuba, Lake Kasumigaura, and other sites of natural beauty. The program is open to Ohio State juniors and seniors who have a minimum 3.0 GPA and at least 2 years (or equivalent) of college-level Japanese instruction by the time the program begins. INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM – WASEDA UNIVERSITY Offered: Academic Year (September to June) This student exchange program offers instruction in Japanese language, and courses in Japanese and Asian culture, society, politics and economics taught in English. The program is open to Ohio State juniors and seniors who have a minimum 3.0 GPA and at least 2 years (or equivalent) of college-level Japanese instruction by the time the program begins.
