London Semester Program London Internship Program Offered: Semester or Academic Year All of the above universities are located in London. The universities offer different disciplinary courses, including engineering, science, business, humanities, social science and performing arts. Applicants must have an overall 3.0 GPA at the time of application. Students live in university student housing or in flats. AIFS PROGRAM AT RICHMOND UNIVERSITY Offered: Semester or Academic Year Through the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS), OSU students may study for a semester or academic year at Richmond University in London England. The University offers small classes in a wide variety of disciplines taught by outstanding British, European and American faculty. Small classes and personal attention from the faculty, a course advising service and a wide range of courses make Richmond an ideal study abroad choice. Courses are offered in humanities, international relations, and economics. Richmond also provides optional co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as a tour of Parliament and meeting with an MP, visits to local art galleries, theater performances, visits to London museums, a tour of the Bank of England, visits to multinational companies, and a visiting lecture series. Students live in a University residence hall either at the Kensington Campus or the Richmond Hill Campus, depending on grade level. The AIFS program at Richmond University is open to sophomore, juniors, and seniors with a minimum 2.5 GPA or better. ENGLAND: HONORS AND SCHOLARS BIOLOGICAL ROOTS Offered: Spring Break (March 12– 22, 2008) The Biological Roots in England Program offers an opportunity for honors and scholars students to study biology in a cross-cultural setting. The Winter Quarter course on campus is intended to give students a deeper understanding of the context in which significant discovery in the biological sciences occurred and continues to occur in the United Kingdom. In addition, students will develop more fully their skills in research of documents and in oral presentation, and they will experience a different but comfortably accessible culture in London, southern England, and Wales as the class visits sites discussed during the quarter. Students will research and discuss topics relevant to the history of biology, including such topics as The Royal Society, HMS Endeavour, Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Kew Gardens, and Oxford University. After Winter Quarter in Columbus the group will spend ten days in London, Southern England and Wales visiting traditional sites of historical and scientific significance such as the British Museum, Down House, the Museum of Natural History, Cambridge University, and other locations corresponding to the course topics. ENGLAND: MULTICULTURAL HISTORIES AND LEGACIES OF LONDON Offered: Spring Break (March 13– 22, 2008) Multicultural Histories and Legacies of London experience is designed to provide a multi-perspective and cross-cultural examination of the concept of social justice through civic engagement. The learning opportunity challenges participants to consider issues such as privilege, social class, and cultural identity as factors that determine what roles and responsibilities, if any, individuals and communities have in creating equitable societies for all. The College of Arts & Sciences and College of Education and Human Ecology majors are strongly encouraged to apply, but all majors are welcome. Students must be in good academic standing with the University. Accepted students are required to enroll in EDU P&L 271 M (MUNDO Section) Winter Quarter 2008 as a condition for participation in the London experience. Participants will also be required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of local community service and/or diversity immersion experiences during Winter Quarter 2008 as defined during the Autumn Quarter Information. ENGLAND & SCOTLAND: FRESHMAN SEMINAR IN GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES Offered: Spring Break (March 14 – 22, 2008) This program offers freshman students the opportunity to examine the development of several concepts that strongly influence the present fields of geology and biology both in Ohio and abroad. During the Winter Quarter course on campus students will study the scientific contributions of Hutton and Darwin as described in recent biographies. Because these contributions were strongly affected by the social, economic, religious, and political environments in which Hutton and Darwin worked, discussions will also consider those societal factors and will reflect on the potential effects of modern societal influences on contemporary American science. Following the Winter Quarter course, students will spend 9 days visiting sites in and around London, where Darwin lived and wrote, and in and around Edinburgh, where Hutton lived and wrote. During the program, students will gain a better understanding of these men and their scientific contributions, of the cultural setting in which these men worked, and of the influence of that setting on their lives and scientific contributions. This program is open to freshmen of all majors who are in good academic standing. ENGLAND: LONDON PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM Offered: Following Spring Quarter (June 6 – 15, 2008) This program is an extension of a seminar that meets weekly Spring Quarter 2008. The class is an introduction to British life and culture and how it relates to the field of Psychology. The London Psychology program offers an opportunity to Psychology majors to gain a unique perspective on the city of London. The London portion of the program will include filed trips to numerous sites of historical and cultural interest. Accompanied by Dr. Alisa Paulsen from the Department of Psychology, the group will visit Cambridge, and the homes and museums of Freud and Darwin. ENGLAND: PHARMACY LONDON EXPERIENCE Offered: June 10–18, 2008 Students in both the Pharmaceutical Sciences undergraduate major and the Doctor of Pharmacy professional program (Pharm D) are eligible for this short-term study abroad experience. The program will be preceded by Pharmacy 693 offered by the College of Pharmacy during spring quarter 2008. The course will focus on healthcare issues in the United Kingdom as well as how the students’ intended field and career differs outside the United States. The following areas will be covered: community hospital pharmacy practice in the UK; the pharmaceutical industry and clinical trial process in the UK; pharmaceutical education and licensure in the UK; and the UK healthcare system. The program’s setting in London will expose students to the city’s diversity and its famous sites as well as locations that reflect the theme of the program. SUMMER PROGRAM IN ENGLISH LITERATURE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GREENWICH Offered: Summer Quarter Length of Term: 6 weeks (early July to mid August) This is a six week program in which participants earn 15 hours of graded Ohio State credit by taking “British Literature and Art 1570-1789,” “The Literature of London: 1789-Present,” as well as an independent study. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and have completed at least one previous course in English beyond English 110/111. Preference is given to junior and senior English majors and minors. Numerous literary/historical walks and visits to London museums, art galleries and theatres are planned as part of the academic program. Professor Jim Phelan from the OSU English department will accompany the group. LONDON THEATRE PROGRAM Offered: Summer Quarter (Offered in 2008) Length of Term: 5 weeks: Early August to Mid September, 2008 This is a five week program in which participants earn 12 to 15 hours of graded Ohio State credit: Theatre 367.01, 674 and 693. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.7 and have completed at least English 110 or 111 and one previous course in Theatre. Numerous lectures, performances, theatre visits and field trips, including a 2-day excursion to Stratford-upon-Avon, are planned as part of the academic program. Professor Lesley Ferris from the OSU Department of Theatre will accompany the group. Applicants must have an overall 3.0 GPA at the time of application. Students live in university student housing or in flats. OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRE-LAW PROGRAM Offered: Summer Quarter Length of Term: 5 weeks (July 1 – August 4, 2008) Participants earn 10 quarter credit hours in special undergraduate comparative law courses: Anglo-American Legal Systems and Society and Law. The program integrates numerous special field trips to places of legal, historical and cultural interest. Students of any major, who have earned a GPA of 3.0 and are interested in law, are welcome to apply. The program is open to eligible students from colleges and universities throughout the U.S. International Exchange ProgramsUNIVERSITY OF YORKOffered: Academic Year One OSU students is selected each year to participate in this program. Participants may register for any course offered at the University of York. This program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students; minimum eligibility is junior ranking with a 3.0 GPA. Applicants must have completed one year of full-time college-level study and meet the minimum GPA requirement of the university they wish to attend. Students live in university student housing.
