This guide offers preliminary information on current opportunities with attention to the level of Spanish required for participation.

Beginning to Intermediate Spanish Language Programs


ECUADOR: ELEMENTARY SPANISH LANGUAGE IN QUITO
Offered:        Winter and Summer Quarters
Length of Term:    10-Week Program

Participants take three classes and earn 12 -15 hours of graded Ohio State credit. Spanish 102, 103, 104, 250, 302, and 395 offered. Applicants who have completed Spanish 250 or above before program commences are not eligible for this program. Students live with local homestay families (one student per family).  A 2.5 overall and 3.0 Spanish GPA is required for admission to program.

MEXICO: ELEMENTARY SPANISH LANGUAGE PROGRAM IN CUERNAVACA
Offered:        Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters
Length of Term:    10-Week Program

Participants take three classes and earn 14 -15 hours of graded Ohio State credit. Spanish 102, 103, 104, 250, and 395 offered. Applicants must not have completed past Spanish 104 before program commences to be eligible for this program. Students live with local homestay families (two students per family).  A 2.5 overall and 3.0 Spanish GPA is required for admission to program.

MEXICO: THE CENTER FOR GLOBAL EDUCATION—AUGSBURG COLLEGE
Offered:        Fall Semester:  late-August – mid-December
Length of Term:    15-Week Program

Participants will learn about the central issues facing Mesoamerica, with emphasis on the experiences and empowerment or women.  The program is based in Cuernavaca, a city known for its perennial springtime.  Students must take three course courses, plus optional course:  Spanish language, Women, Gender, and Social Change in Latin America (WS 624), Latin American Liberation Theologies (WS 697), other course options include:  a second Spanish course, an internship seminar (WS 697), or an independent study seminar (WS697).  Students of all majors with an interest in Women’s Studies, at least sophomore standing, and 2.5 cumulative GPA are eligible.  Students are also required to have completed Spanish 101.01 or the equivalent and WS 101 or 110. 

SPAIN: ISA SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAM IN SALAMANCA
Offered: Summer Quarter
Length of Term:    7-Week Program

Participants take three classes and earn a total of 12-15 quarter hours of graded Ohio State credit. Credit is available for two language classes and one GEC in the following sequences:  103, 104, 395 OR 401,403, 395.  In order to take the higher-level sequence, students need to have passed the SLRPE by the first week of Spring quarter. Students live with local homestay families (two students per family).  ISA administrative staff provides on-site coordination. A 2.5 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 GPA in Spanish courses taken at Ohio State is required for admission to program.

Intermediate to Advanced Spanish Language Programs

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC:   PROGRAM IN HEALTH AND NUTRITION
Offered:     Summer and/or Fall Semester

Participant must have a demonstrated interest in health and nutrition. Students must have completed one year of university-level Spanish for Summer and three years of Spanish for Fall. The Summer component focuses on Spanish language training and an interdisciplinary seminar on Caribbean Health and Nutrition while the Fall component includes advanced Spanish language training, selected regular university courses in health and special area studies, and a field-based independent study project. Students will be housed with host families. Program is sponsored by CIC (“Big Ten” Universities).

SPAIN:   ISA SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAM IN GRANADA
Offered:        Fall and/or Winter Semester,
Length of Term:    15-Week Semester Program

Participants take four to five classes and earn a total of 20-25 quarter hours of graded Ohio State credit.  Credit is available for classes equivalent to Spanish 401, 403, 406, 302 as well as 150, 151, 322 or 395.  Applicants must complete 250 and pass the SLRPE exam prior to the application deadline in order to be eligible for this program.   Students live with local homestay families.  ISA administrative staff provides on-site coordination.  A 2.8 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 GPA in Spanish courses taken at Ohio State is required for admission to program. 

SPAIN:   TOLEDO PROGRAM (FUNDACION JOSE ORTEGA Y GASSET)
Offered:        Summer Quarter,
Length of Term:    6-Week Summer Program

Students generally choose three classes to earn a total of 12-15 quarter hours of graded Ohio State credit.   A wide variety of Spanish language, literature and culture classes are offered.  Credit is available for classes equivalent to Spanish 302, 403, 404, 430, 450, 552, 561, and 595, depending upon fulfillment of course prerequisites.  Summer quarter applicants must have passed the SLRPE exam by the end of the first week of Spring quarter and complete Spanish 401 by the time the program commences.  Students live in dormitory rooms at the Fundacion. For an additional fee, however, students may choose to live with a local host family.   A 2.7 cumulative GPA a 3.0 GPA in Spanish courses taken at Ohio State is required for admission to the program.

Advanced Level Spanish Language Programs

ARGENTINA:   ISA LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSIDAD DE BELGRANO
Offered:        Fall or Spring Semester
Length of Term:    17-Week Program

Participants take four to five classes and earn a total of 20-25 quarter hours of graded Ohio State credit. Credit is available for classes equivalent to Spanish 395, 556, 560, 595, 302 and 603. Applicants are required to have completed, but not gone past Spanish 450 before program commences to be eligible for participation. Students live with local homestay families (two students per family).  ISA administrative staff provides on-site coordination. A 2.8 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 GPA in Spanish courses taken at Ohio State is required for admission to program.

MEXICO: GUANAJUATO PROGRAM
Offered:        Summer Quarter
Length of Term:    8-Week Program

Participants must have completed Spanish 450 to be qualified for this program. Students choose three classes to earn 15 quarter hours of graded Ohio State credit. Students live with local homestay families (two students per family). CIC Resident Director accompanies group. The selection process is coordinated by the University of Iowa.  A 3.0 GPA is required. This program is sponsored by CIC (“Big Ten”) Universities.

MEXICO: UNIVERSITY OF THE AMERICAS
Offered:        Fall and/or Spring Semester
Length of Term:    15-Week Program

Participants must have completed Spanish 450 and have an overall 3.0 GPA to be qualified for this program. Students may choose from a variety of courses in the humanities, social sciences, and biological sciences. Students may live in university dorms on campus or with host families in the city of Puebla.

SPAIN: ISA HISPANIC STUDIES PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GRANADA
Offered:        Fall and/or Winter Semester,
Length of Term:    15-Week Semester Program

Participants must have completed Spanish 450 by the time the program begins.  Students take four or five classes and earn a total of 20-25 quarter hours of graded Ohio State credit.  Credit is available for classes equivalent to Spanish 406, 552, 556, 561, 581, 595 or 603.  Students live with local homestay families.  ISA administrative staff provides on-site coordination.  A 2.8 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 GPA in Spanish courses taken at Ohio State is required for admission to program.

SPAIN: ISA HISPANIC STUDIES PROGRAM AT UNIVERSIDAD COMPLUTENSE DE MADRID
Offered:        Winter Semester,
Length of Term:    15-Week Semester Program

Participants must have completed Spanish 450 by the time the program begins.  Students take four to five classes and earn a total of 20-25 quarter hours of graded Ohio State credit.  Credit is available for classes equivalent to Spanish 552, 561, 595 or 697.  Students live with local homestay families.  ISA staff provides on-site coordination. A 2.8 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 GPA in Spanish courses taken at Ohio State is required for admission.

SPAIN: TOLEDO PROGRAM (FUNDACION JOSE ORTEGA Y GASSET)
Offered:         Fall and/or Spring Semester
Length of Term:    15-Week Semester Program

Applicants must have completed Spanish 450 by the time the program begins. A wide variety of Spanish language, literature, culture and linguistics classes are offered. Semester students generally choose five classes to earn a total of 20-25 quarter hours of graded Ohio State credit.  Credit is available for classes equivalent to a variety of courses applicable to the Spanish major or minor, and to other departmental programs.  Students live in dormitory rooms at the Fundacion or with a local host family. An overall GPA of 2.8 and 3.0 GPA in Spanish courses taken at Ohio State is required for admission.

Advanced Level Spanish International Exchange Programs

CHILE: UNIVERSIDAD ACADEMIA
Offered:        Fall (August – December) and/or Spring Semester (March – July)

Applicants must have completed Spanish 450 by the time the program begins and hold a minimum 3.0 GPA to be eligible for the program.  The program consists of two core courses (Human Rights, Gender, and Multiculturalism and Spanish) and a maximum of three existing courses.  The program includes field outings and visits around Santiago to learn about its history, and culture, trips to the Central Valley coast, and the Cordillera de Los Andes.  Students will receive graded Ohio State credit with equivalencies determined by the appropriate Ohio State academic department. 

MEXICO: MONTERREY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Offered:        Fall and/or Spring Semester

Students must have junior standing and have completed at least Spanish 450 to participate in this exchange program.  A 3.0 overall GPA is required.  Advanced Spanish language ability is required of all students who want to take courses offered in Spanish. Students may choose from a variety of courses in engineering, languages, the humanities, social sciences, and business.  Students will receive graded Ohio State credit with equivalencies determined by the appropriate Ohio State academic department.

MEXICO:  CIDE-TEACHING AND ECONOMICS RESEARCH CENTER
Offered:    Fall Semester (August – December), Spring Semester (January – June), or Academic Year

This program is open to junior and senior undergraduate students who have completed Spanish 450 and a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Courses are available in economics, public administration, political science, international studies, history, and legal studies.  Students will receive graded Ohio State credit with equivalences determined by the appropriate Ohio State academic departments.  As CIDE as no on-campus housing, exchange students are assisted by CIDE staff to find suitable arrangements for their stay in Mexico.

SPAIN: UNIVERSIDAD AUTONOMA DE MADRID
Offered:        Fall and/or Spring Semester

Students must have junior standing and have completed at least Spanish 450 to participate in this exchange program. A 3.3 GPA is required. Students will receive graded Ohio State credit with equivalencies determined by the appropriate Ohio State academic department. Students live with host families or in apartments, since the university does not have on-campus housing.

No Spanish Language Background Required

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: PROGRAM IN INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Offered:        Winter Quarter
Length of Term:    6-Week Program

Students are introduced to agricultural production and rural development in the Dominican Republic in this intensive program of courses, workshops, and field trips. All courses are taught in English by faculty of the Instituto Superior de Agricultura. Students earn 15 hours of graded Ohio State credit as follows: Agricultural Economics 697 (5 hrs), Rural Sociology 697 (5 hrs), and Spanish 697 (5 hrs).  Students live in on-campus dormitories.

MEXICO: ALL SCHOLARS 
Offered: Winter Break (December 7 – 17, 2007)

This short-term study abroad program is for students who are enrolled in at least their 2nd year or higher in any of the Ohio State Scholar Programs (Art, Architecture, Biological Sciences, Business, Communication Technology, Environment & Natural Resources, Health Sciences, Humanities, International Affairs, Mount Leadership Society, Pharmacy, Politics, Society & Law, and Tomorrow’s Teachers). The study abroad portion of the program is preceded by the course SPAN 510: Mexican Studies, which will be offered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese during autumn quarter 2007. The faculty instructor for the class will be Professor Ignacio Corona.  For Fall 2007 the theme for the course will be globalization and its effect on Mexican society.

HONDURAS: ENGINEERING SERVICE LEARNING AT MONTAÑA DE LUZ
Offered: Spring Break (March 14 – 22, 2008)

The Honduras service-learning project is an academic program out of the College of Engineering. Students take a course during winter quarter to prepare them for and enhance their time abroad.  The course will focus on cultural awareness, problem solving, and international service learning.  These three main ideas will be integrated into the course in a variety of ways including guest lecturers, independent student research, team activities and the participation in the study-abroad experience in Honduras.  The program is open to students of all majors, but preference is given to students in the College of Engineering. Accepted students will be required to enroll in Engineering 692: Service-Learning in Engineering (3 hours) during Winter Quarter 2007 as a condition for participation in this program.

HONDURAS: SERVICE LEARNING AT MONTAÑA DE LUZ
Offered: Spring Quarter pre-departure class; study program September 5 – 17, 2008; Autumn Quarter Registration

The Honduras service-learning project is lead by the College of Education and Human Ecology but available to all majors. Students take a course during spring quarter focused on cultural awareness, problem solving, and international service learning. While in-country, students will work on teams to address particular needs identified by the host institution. Tentative teams include education, nutrition, and community development. The institution director will be working closely with the Resident Director and students throughout the course and study abroad to ensure that service projects will effectively address the identified community needs.
