Faculty and Student Grant Competition - Spring 2008

Purpose: The purpose of the Office of International Affairs faculty and student grant competition is to promote the understanding of foreign countries, cultures, and peoples through academic study.

Projects: Grants will be given for projects that explore the languages, cultures, arts, politics, economy, or socio-demographic aspects of a foreign region. Proposals addressing global issues are also eligible if these issues are explored in a regional context. This includes, for example, proposals about public health, public policy, and climate change.

Use: International Affairs grants can be used to support two types of activities:

  1. Research projects
  2. Student programs

Faculty, as well as graduate and undergraduate students, can submit proposals in either category.

Application Contents

  • Proposals for research can request funds for expenses such as travel, acquiring data, and hosting a conference or workshop. Research proposals are judged on their academic merit and their likelihood of producing high quality publications and/or external funds.
  • Proposals for student programs should be designed to provide Ohio State students with valuable international experiences. This could include, for example, a symposium, a speaker series, or a film series designed for students. Faculty also may use grants to subsidize a study abroad program they lead.

Proposals for student programs are judged first and foremost on their academic quality. The importance of the opportunity they provide to Ohio State students is also considered.

Proposals must include:

  • Application
  • 3 to 5 page description of the project
  • Budget sheet for research program or student program
  • Curriculum vitae (CV) of the applicant(s)
  • Students must submit two letters of recommendation from Ohio State faculty members as well as their transcripts
  • Faculty may submit letters of support that pledge other funds to the project, though this is not required

Applications are due Friday, March 28, 2008
